| NewsWhat's in a (Nick)Name? Thank you to the brothers who answered our recent call for nicknames. Andrew O'Neill '98 shared the following: "In my memory, Scott Standley '97 has the best nicknames: (i) 'Tuesday,' in commemoration of his birthday, (ii) 'Meatball,' in reference to his favorite treat from Bob Jones, (iii) 'Stemple' (see, Harvey), as a nod to his superior academic performance, (iv) 'Bitterman' (as sung to Vedder's "Better Man") noting his penchant to storm off the pong table when things didn't go his way, and, of course (v) 'Scottie Big Head,' which is self-explanatory." We recently reported that Penn was named No. 1 among universities with the most powerful alumni networks in 2011. And we know that the Fiji connections have likely led to great job opportunities too. Did you land a job thanks to a career network formed at Fiji? Share your story on the message board. From the Archives Fijis in 1960 With the brothers active in all University organizations and events, the Fijis had an exceptionally active year on campus. One of the most famous parties on the campus was the Fiji Island Party . The house was decorated as an island in the southern Pacific for this annual event, which was as enjoyable as ever. The annual Christmas Formal was the highlight of the fall semester . The atmosphere of a Paris Cafe was captured by the Phi Gam's when they held their Attache Party. Undergraduate Chapter Under Probation Brothers I am dismayed to inform you that this past fall there was reported to the Fraternity and Sorority Affairs Office (OFSA) an alleged incident of hazing in the Fall semester with pledges at the house. It was quickly addressed by the graduate board and the response by the undergraduates was satisfactory with being on the right path with pledging in the future. Unfortunately this spring the undergraduates had an unregistered party with a Villanova sorority at an off campus location in which a woman from the sorority came to the event on her birthday heavily intoxicated. The brothers and the sisters called an ambulance to have her taken to the hospital. The woman was fine; however the incident was reported to the University and the event, having alcohol and not being registered by the fraternity, was in violation of University’s policies. With 2 incidents virtually coming back to back OFSA has placed the undergraduates on probation. We have agreed with OFSA on a 20 point plan that is very comprehensive and requires a concerted effort by the undergrads, graduate board, and International Phi Gamma Delta in repairing our standing with the University. We will keep you informed of our progress and expect by spring of 2013 to have achieved every milestone agreed to in the plan of action and return to full standing with the University.
